Day 1: Depart the USA

Day 2: ROME ARRIVAL

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

Welcome to Rome! Upon arrival, we meet our English-speaking guide, board our motor coach, and depart to visit the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where we celebrate Mass. Nearby, we see the Tre Fontane Convent, where St. Paul was beheaded. Check into the hotel and enjoy a well-deserved night of rest. Dinner and overnight in Rome. (D)

Day 3: ROME – PAPAL AUDIENCE

Location : Vatican City

After breakfast, we board our motorcoach and head for St. Peter’s Square, where we attend the Papal Audience with Pope Francis. Following lunch, we visit the nearby North American College — where our priest chaplain, Father Matt Duclos, lived and studied! — and enjoy the magnificent view of Rome from its rooftop. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore the Eternal City on your own. (We can offer some tips if you need suggestions, although there really are no wrong turns in Rome. Explore, eat, enjoy!) Perhaps visit the Vatican Museum (be sure to purchase tickets online before your trip). Dinner is at leisure. Mass will be celebrated. Overnight in Rome. (B. Special lunch)

Day 4: ANCIENT ROME

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

Today we are introduced to some of the most fascinating city sights during the Ancient Rome tour. Visit the Colosseum (inside view) and the Roman Forum (outside view), the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Santa Maria Della Minerva (which houses the sarcophagus of St. Catherine of Siena), Church of the Gesú (which includes the tomb of St. Ignatius Loyola and a relic of St. Francis Xavier), and Piazza Navona with its fabulous fountains. Mass will be celebrated at Casa Santa Maria (TBC), located within a 17th-century cloister. Tonight dinner is at Ristorante L’Orso 80. Overnight in Rome. (B. Special dinner)

Day 5: CHRISTIAN ROME

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

This morning we visit St. Peter’s Basilica and see the Scavi Tunnels (TBC) beneath the Basilica. Following lunch, we continue with the visits of the major Basilicas as we explore St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, and the Holy Stairs next door. Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Major. Tonight we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Rome. (B. Special dinner)

Day 6: ORVIETO – ASSISI

Location : Orvieto, Province of Terni, Italy

We depart this morning after breakfast, crossing the Chianti Hills and the green Umbrian Valley to arrive in Orvieto and take the funicular to the upper town. Tour the beautiful Basilica of Orvieto, celebrate Mass, and see the Miracle of the Eucharist of Bolsena. We enjoy lunch and a taste of one of the most famous Italian white wines, Orvieto Superiore D.O.C. — at an ancient Franciscan convent, Ristorante al San Francesco. Following some leisure time, we continue to Assisi. On the way, we stop to visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels Church, which houses within the 9th-century church known as the Porziuncola, one of the most sacred places for those who love St. Francis of Assisi, before checking into our hotel in Assisi for dinner and overnight (B. Day 7: ASSISI

Location : Assisi, Province of Perugia, Italy

This morning we visit the Basilica of St. Francis, the upper Basilica with Giotto’s frescoes representing the life of St. Francis, then the lower Basilica and the Tomb of St. Francis. We celebrate Mass in one of the side chapels in the Basilica. We visit the Basilica of St. Clare and the Chapel of San Damiano, where St. Francis received his call to rebuild the Church and where St. Clare lived and died. Our next stop is the Church of St. Mary Major, also known as the Sanctuary of Spoliation, to see the place where St. Francis of Assisi was baptized, and the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (B.D)

Day 8: SIENA AND WINERY VISIT – FLORENCE

Location : Siena, Province of Siena, Italy

After breakfast, we board our motor coach and drive to Siena, where we visit St. Dominic Church to see the reliquary containing St. Catherine of Siena’s skull, celebrate Mass, and walk to the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, famous for the Palio horse races. Although it requires climbing lots of steps, this beautiful piazza is worth the effort! We stop at a local winery in the afternoon to learn about Tuscan wine production and enjoy a wine tasting. Dinner and overnight in Florence. (B.D)

Day 9: FLORENCE

Location : Florence, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy

After our hearty buffet breakfast, explore the city many consider the cultural heart of Italy. We visit some of the important sites of Florence, including the Duomo and the Baptistery (outside views) and Santa Croce, where Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli are buried. Although his remains are elsewhere, the poet Dante is also memorialized here with an empty tomb. We celebrate Mass here. In the afternoon, we visit the Accademia Gallery to see the famous statue of David by Michelangelo. The rest of the afternoon and dinner are at leisure to explore Florence. Overnight in Florence. Day 10: PADUA

Location : Padua, Province of Padua, Italy

Following breakfast, we drive to Padua. Visit the historic center with criss-crossed canals punctuated with bridges and beautiful scenery. Visit the Chapel degli Scrovegni (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its Giotto frescoes (TBC) and the Basilica of Saint Anthony, including the tomb and reliquaries of this miracle-working saint. St. Anthony was a powerful Franciscan preacher and teacher. He was born in Lisbon in 1195 and died outside Padua in 1231, having led a short but intense religious life. We celebrate Mass at St. Anthony’s Basilica. Dinner and overnight in Padua. (B.D)

Day 11: Venice

Location : Venice, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy

After breakfast at the hotel, a short drive takes us to Venice. Enter the city by the Vaporetto and see the sights with our local guide. Visit the lavish Doges’ Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Square, and its Basilica. Lunch is on your own. Spend time at leisure or take an optional gondola ride. We celebrate Mass in Venice. We return to Padua for the farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Padua. (B. Special dinner)

Day 12: RETURN TO USA
