Day 2: WELCOME TO ITALY – ROME – ASSISI

Location : Rome, Italy

Our professional English-speaking guide meets us at the airport and assists us with the luggage and bus boarding. We are on the way to Assisi. (2 hour drive). Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (D)

Day 3: ASSISI

Location : Assisi, Province of Perugia, Italy

Considered one of the most peaceful spots in Italy, Assisi is a spiritual treasure. The day starts with a visit to the St. Francis Basilica for Mass. We see the tomb of St. Francis and further explore the upper and the lower parts of the Basilica with our expert guide before walking the length of the town to the Church of St. Clare and the Convent of San Damiano. In the afternoon, we visit the Sanctuary of the Spoliation to see the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis in the Church of St. Mary Major in the Valley. We may wish to hike up to the Hermitage where St. Francis prayed. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Assisi. (B.D)

Day 4: CASCIA – LORETO

Location : Loreto, Province of Ancona, Italy

Today we have a full-day excursion starting with a visit to Cascia, home of St. Rita, where we see the Saint’s incorrupt body, and places associated with her life and work. Following lunch, we drive to Loreto, where we see the Holy House of Nazareth, which tradition tells us was the home of the Blessed Mother Mary, transported on angel’s wings from the Holy Land to Italy. We visit the Basilica and celebrate Mass in this holy site. We return to Assisi for the overnight. (B.L.D)

Day 5: ORVIETO – ROME

Location : Orvieto, Province of Terni, Italy

The drive this morning takes us to the magnificent hilltop town of Orvieto, famous for its wine and the Cathedral, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. We take a funicular to the town, where we see the dodecagon, a rare and unique twelve-sided figure, at Sant’s Andrea Church on Piazza Republican, in the form of a twelve-sided bell tower, we visit the Cathedral and see the Miracle of the Eucharist of Bolsena. We arrive Rome late in the afternoon. Overnight in Rome. (B.D)

Day 6: PAPAL AUDIENCE

Location : Vatican City

Today, we are transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica early in the morning to take our place at the weekly Papal Audience, where we receive the Papal Blessing and see the Holy Father. Following lunch, we visit St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica for Mass and Tre Fontane Convent nearby, to see where St. Paul was beheaded. We then drive out to the Catacombs to explore the tunnels where the early Christians buried their dead and prayed in secret. Overnight in Rome. (B.L.D)

Day 7: VATICAN TREASURES & BAROQUE ROME

Location : Vatican Museums, Vatican City

Today we visit the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel. We explore St. Peter’s Basilica and see the Scavi tunnels underneath the Vatican. (TBC). In the afternoon, we cross over the Tiber into central Rome for a walking tour to include the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva and St. Gesu Church to see the rooms of St. Ignatius. Our last stop is Piazza Navona, where the official tour ends. Overnight Rome. (B.D)

Day 8: MONTE CASSINO and ST. SCHOLASTICA ABBEY

Location : Monte Cassino, Cassino, Province of Frosinone, Italy

We visit two Benedictine Abbeys founded by St. Benedict of Nursia, who named the Abbey of St. Scholastica after his twin sister. In the morning, we visit St. Scholastica Abbey to see St. Benedict’s hermitage and where St. Francis came for a retreat. We learn about the life of St. Benedict, his beliefs, and instructions on life known as the Rule of St. Benedict, which still directs religious life even after fifteen centuries. Monte Cassino is the Abbey destroyed during the Allied bombings in WWII and rebuilt after the war. We tour the church and the library and celebrate Mass. Return to Rome for an overnight. (B.D.)

Day 9: CHRISTIAN and ANCIENT ROME

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

Today, you are at the center of Western civilization and the heart of modern Italy. The “Eternal City,” where three millennia of Mediterranean civilization co-exist, is full of largerthan-life monuments, which we see during the Ancient and Christian Rome tour. In the morning, we see thousands of years’ worth of history in the Christian Rome tour, including visits to the Basilicas of St. Mary Major, St. John the Lateran, the Holy Stairs, and the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Mass is celebrated at St. Mary Major. History is revealed before us as we tour the Coliseum and visit the Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini Church near Piazza Barberini, where we see skeletal remains of more than 3700 Capuchin friars. A totally different experience! Our last stop of the day is along the Tiber River to see the ramshackle church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, with its magnificent floor and 13th-century altar. We visit the church and see the big attraction at its entrance portico, the iconic and mysterious Bocca della Verità, known as the Mouth of Truth. According to the legend, those not telling the truth will be punished as the Mouth of Truth bites off their hand. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner in a local restaurant in the Trastevere section of Rome, where we have time to walk through the whimsical neighborhoods and snap some last-minute photos that will always remind us of this amazing trip.
