Day 2: WELCOME TO ITALY

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy

Once we clear passport control and customs, we are greeted in the arrivals hall by our professional English-speaking tour guide who will assist us with luggage and boarding the motorcoach. Settle into the comfortable coach for a short ride to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls where we celebrate Mass and see the tomb of the saint as well as the crucifix from which Christ spoke to St. Bridget of Sweden. Continue to Tre Fontane, where St. Paul was beheaded. We check into our hotel and have a relaxing dinner at our hotel. Overnight in Rome. (D)

Day 3: PAPAL AUDIENCE – CHRISTIAN ROME

Location : Vatican City

Today we are at St. Peter’s Square, where we attend the Papal Audience with Pope Francis. Following time for shopping and lunch, we move on to St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, and the Holy Stairs. We celebrate Mass at Santa Maria Della Vittoria. Overnight in Rome. (B, Lunch with wine, D)

Day 4: VATICAN TREASURES

Location : Vatican City

Today we explore the Vatican. We celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. (TBC). Our exploration of the greatest Catholic Basilicas in the world begins with a tour of the Scavi (underground tunnels beneath the Vatican) (TBC) and of St. Peter’s Basilica. Enjoy seeing masterpieces of the Vatican Museums, including the incomparable Sistine Chapel. Overnight in Rome. (B, D)

Day 5: ANCIENT ROME – AFTERNOON AT LEISURE

Location : Greccio, Province of Rieti, Italy

This morning we tour the Coliseum, see the Forum (outside view), throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, take pictures by the Spanish Steps, walk to Santa Maria Sopra Minerva Church, see the Pantheon and end at Piazza Navone where we enjoy lunch on our own. In the afternoon we have leisure time to explore the city on our own. Mass will be celebrated. Overnight in Rome. Dinner is on our own. (B)

Day 6: ORVIETO – WINE TASTING – ASSISI

Location : Orvieto, Province of Terni, Italy

The drive this morning takes us through the Umbrian hills to the magnificent hilltop town of Orvieto, famous for its wine and the Cathedral, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. Take a funicular to the town where we see the dodecagon, a rare and unique 12-sided figure in the form of a bell tower, at Sant’ Andrea Church on Piazza Della Repubblica. Celebrate Mass at the Cathedral, where we see the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena. We have lunch, with a taste of the famous Orvieto Classico wine, which this region is famous for. Continue to Assisi. Our stop before we check into our hotel is at the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli (St. Mary of the Angels) to explore the basilica, including the Porziuncola (the chapel where St. Francis started his order). Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (B, Lunch with wine, D)

Day 7: Assisi

Location : Assisi, Province of Perugia, Italy

One of the most peaceful spots in Italy, Assisi, is a spiritual treasure with countryside views that St. Francis and St. Claire themselves must have enjoyed. The day starts with a visit to St. Francis Basilica for Mass at one of the chapels in the Basilica. (TBC) We see the tomb of St. Francis and further explore the upper and the lower parts of the Basilica with our expert guide before walking the length of the town to the Basilica of St. Clare. Following lunch on our own, we visit San Damiano. The afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (B, D)

Day 8: TUSCAN FARM – SIENA – FLORENCE

Location : Siena, Province of Siena, Italy

We travel through the rolling hills of Umbria to the Tuscan region, where we visit a local farm to learn about cheese and olive oil production. After a hearty meal accompanied by good local wine, we head to Siena, where we celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Dominic and see the relics of St. Catherine of Siena and St. Benedict. We have time to explore Siena on our own before we drive to Florence and settle into our hotel. Dinner is at leisure. Overnight in Florence. (B, Special lunch)

Day 9: FLORENCE

Location : Florence, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy

Our two-hour walking tour takes us to see the Duomo and the Baptistery next door (outside view), the Church of the Holy Cross, Signoria Square, Ponte Vecchio, and other highlights of the city. Mass will be celebrated at the Medici Chapel in the Church of San Lorenzo. (TBC) In the afternoon, we visit the Academia to see the beautiful statue of David by Michelangelo, followed by time at leisure. Dinner is on our own. (B)

Day 10: FLORENCE – FRASCATI

Location : Castel Gandolfo, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy

After breakfast, we celebrate Mass and have free time in Florence, perhaps to do some additional shopping before departing for the Frascati wine region. Time permitting we stop at Castel Gandolfo to explore the charming little town where the Papal Residence is the dominant attraction. Overnight Frascati area. (B, D)

Day 11: HADRIAN’s VILLA – TIVOLI GARDENS

Location : Villa d'Este, Piazza Trento, Tivoli, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy

We visit two of Italy’s most impressive villas, Villa D’Este and Hadrian’s Villa. Our first stop is Hadrian’s Villa, built in the 2nd century by Emperor Hadrian, and once greater than the center of Imperial Rome. The largest and most luxurious residence ever built in Italy, it features an impressive array of imperial palaces, temples, theaters, thermal baths, and pools. After lunch, explore the grounds of the Villa D’Este, where our guide will tell us about the history and development of the villa, considered one of the most enchanting sites of the late Italian Renaissance. Once the home of Lucrezia Borgia’s son, it is renowned for its spectacular gardens and trees, as well as its waterfalls and fountains, such as the Fontana dell’ Ovato and Le Cento Fontane (The Hundred Fountains).Mass will be celebrated. Return to our hotel to freshen up before our beautiful farewell dinner tonight in a local restaurant — overnight, Frascati. (B, Farewell dinner)
