Day 2: Zurich, Solothurn, Lucerne

Location : Lucerne, Switzerland

Upon arrival, we meet our English-speaking tour guide and board the motorcoach for a drive to Lucerne, considered one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. En route, we visit Muri Abbey. Founded in the 11th century, with its church dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, the abbey has a centuries-long connection with Europe’s House of Habsburg. We’ll celebrate Mass and, after lunch, we will visit Saint Ursus Cathedral in Solothurn. Settle into our hotel in Lucerne for dinner and overnight. (D)

Day 3: Lucerne, Engelberg, Mt. Titlis

Location : Titlis, Engelberg, Switzerland

We head by coach to Engelberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120 (whose first abbot came from Muri Abbey). This monastery would eventually establish 2 Benedictine monasteries in the USA, including Conception Abbey in Missouri in 1873. We travel by cable car to the top of Mount Titlis, considered one of Switzerland’s premiere destinations. Mass is celebrated at Engelberg Abbey, and we have time to explore this lovely little Swiss town. We return to Lucerne for a walking city tour. Tonight we take a seat at a rustic table for dinner of cheese fondue, sizzling Bratwurst, and crisp Roesti potatoes. Watch an authentic Swiss folklore show with yodeling and singing as well as Alphorn blowing and flag throwing. A night to remember! Overnight in Lucerne. (B. Special dinner)

Day 4: Lucerne and Jungfraujoch

Location : Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

Discover Europe’s highest train station on this full-day train tour to Jungfraujoch. We admire the Bernese Oberland on our way to Lauterbrunnen, where we complete our Alpine ascent by cogwheel train. On arrival, we take time to marvel at the UNESCO-listed landscape and explore summit attractions, such as the Ice Palace and Sphinx Observatory where we soak up the panoramic views over Aletsch Glacier, Europe’s longest glacier. Mass will be celebrated. Return to Lucerne for dinner and overnight. (B.D)

Day 5: Lake Lucerne Boat Rise and Lugano

After breakfast at the hotel, we take the scenic Gotthard Panorama Express boat on Lake Lucerne before we board the train to Lugano, where we have dinner and overnight. Mass will be celebrated. (B.D)

Day 6: Lugano

Location : Lugano, Switzerland

Perfectly positioned on a lake with the Alps at its back, lucky Lugano has a bit of everything including the colorful Piazza Della Riforma, where we can sample some slow-cooked Ticinese cuisine. We enjoy a day of sightseeing which includes a cable car to Monte San Salvatore and Santa Maria Degli Angioli Church. Once part of a Franciscan monastery, this church’s extraordinary frescoes were uncovered during a renovation in the 1920’s. Return to Lugano for free time and dinner on our own. Mass will be celebrated. Overnight in Lugano. (B)

Day 7: Lugano

Location : Lugano, Switzerland

Following breakfast, we celebrate Mass and explore Lugano. The city of Lugano is the Swiss pearl in the Canton Ticino region. We walk along Via Nassa, the famous fashion street of Lugano, to Lugano’s Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Our tour includes San Rocco Church, and the Museo d’Arte della Svizzera Italiana, regarded as one of Switzerland’s finest art museums. There’s much to enjoy in Lugano, and we’ll have time to explore this town at leisure. Dinner will be on our own. (B)

Day 8: Einsiedeln

Location : Einsiedeln, Switzerland

Early this morning we depart the mountain area driving to the principal Marian Shrine of Switzerland, Our Lady of Einsiedeln, where we will see the statue of the Black Madonna. This Benedictine abbey was established in the 10th century on the site of St. Meinrad’s hermitage, where he was martyred in 861. Einsiedeln has been a popular pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages and has long been a place for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago to rest and pray. This monastic community founded several monasteries in the USA, including Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana in 1854. We tour the breathtaking Abbey Church, celebrate Mass, and visit the Monastery Library. After time at leisure, we return to the abbey for Vespers with the monks. Overnight in the area. (B.D)

Day 9: Zurich

Location : Zürich, Switzerland

We drive to Zurich this morning following Mass. We enjoy a boat ride down the Limmat River under the bridges and visit the Fraumunster Church to see the incredible Chagall stained glass windows. Stop at a “Co-op” for value-priced shopping and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner will be on our own, with an opportunity to try the local bratwurst with beer, a favorite food of the locals. Overnight in Zurich. (B)

Day 10: Rapperswil, St. Gallen, Zurch

Location : Rapperswil, Switzerland

After breakfast, we visit the medieval town of Rapperswil, known as “the town of roses.” We can stroll along Lake Zurich on the restored wooden walkway which is a section of the routes comprising the Camino de Santiago. After lunch on our own, we go to the city of St. Gallen to see the Abbey of St.Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This abbey was founded in the 8th century by St. Othmar on the site of St. Gall’s hermitage and was one of Europe’s most significant monasteries during the Middle Ages. It was the site of St. Wiborada’s martyrdom in 926. She is a patron saint of libraries, so it is fitting that we visit the Abbey Library. It is the third oldest library in the world — among the most beautiful— and home to some of the oldest surviving books and manuscripts in Europe. Mass will be celebrated. We return to Zurich for our farewell dinner in a local restaurant accompanied by wine. Overnight in Zurich. (B. Special dinner)
