Become an Activated Disciple!

The theme of this pilgrimage is the “Activated Disciple.” It was on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee that Jesus called the first disciples, but what does that mean for us? On the pilgrimage Jeff will teach us about Jesus, the rabbi, and how disciples were chosen in the 1st century. Jeff will describe the life of a disciple 2000 years ago, and then demonstrate how that can become a reality for people today. Fr. Mike’s homilies will encourage and challenge us to be an “Activated Disciple” who walks with God in the modern world. Our prayer is that young people will hear God’s call on their life and take that step to follow Jesus. Please join us for this life-changing journey in the footsteps of Jesus, the Apostles and the Blessed Mother.

Day 1: Depart the USA

Depart from multiple airports on an international overnight flight to Tel Aviv. Available group air space will be offered from the following airports: Newark, JFK, Boston, Washington Dulles, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. Dinner and breakfast are served on the flight. Specific seat assignments are not possible and may be requested at the airport before departure or upon receipt of your final documents about two weeks before departure.

Day 2: ARRIVAL – Tel Aviv

Location : Tel Aviv, Israel

Upon arrival at Tel Aviv airport, the group will be greeted by our airport representative and assisted through passport control to the baggage area. Pick up your luggage and go to the bus, which takes you to the Tel Aviv hotel for check-in. Following dinner, we celebrate Mass at the hotel and have a welcome orientation to meet our priests and pilgrimage leadership. Overnight in Tel Aviv. (D)

Day 3: Caesarea Maritima - Magdala - Sea of Galilee

Location : Magdala, Israel

Following breakfast, which is included each morning, we check out of the hotel in Tel Aviv, meet the guides, and board the bus according to the color code assigned in your paperwork (you will be on your assigned bus starting today). Our first stop is Caesarea Maritima, where Jeff Cavins and Fr. Mike Schmitz greet the entire group in the ancient theatre. After a teaching by Jeff, our guides will bring us through the ancient harbor town built by Herod to see the ruins of his palace, the hippodrome, the port, and the aqueducts. The day continues with a lunch stop in the Mt. Carmel range before reaching Mt. Arbel, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. We then descend to the shore of the Sea to visit Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene. Here we see a 1st-century synagogue and celebrate Mass in the “boat chapel.” After dinner at our hotels, we proceed to check-in. (As today is the Jewish Sabbath, we may need to wait until after dinner to be assigned our rooms). Overnight at hotels on the Sea of Galilee. (B.L.D)

DAY 4: CAPERNAUM - ST PETER'S PRIMACY - RAFTING

Location : Capernaum, Israel

This morning, we drive to Capernaum, Jesus’ ministry headquarters and one of the first towns where the gospel was preached. Jeff teaches about Jesus choosing his disciples. Here we see the home of St. Peter and have Mass over that location. Next, a walk along the shores of the Sea of Galilee takes us to the Church of the Primacy of Peter for a time to reflect on our vocations. Today we can try St. Peter’s Fish for lunch at a beach restaurant. In the afternoon, we have the option to go rafting on the Jordan River (bring your bathing suit if you do not wish to have your clothes wet). Tonight, following the buffet dinner at the hotels, the priests will hear confession on the shore of the Sea. Overnight Sea of Galilee. (B.L.D)

DAY 5: MT. PRECIPICE – NAZARETH – KFAR KEDEM FARM – SUSITA

Location : Nazareth, Israel

Our day starts with Jeff teaching at Mt. Precipice as we overlook the Jezreel Valley. At the Church of Annunciation in Nazareth, we celebrate Mass, visit the Grotto and see St. Joseph’s Church. Our lunch today is at Kfar Kedem, a farm that recreates the ancient bible world, where we participate in bread and cheese making and ride a donkey! In the afternoon, we stop at Susita, a newly opened site overlooking the Sea of Galilee, where Emily Cavins has excavated. This archaeological site has several Byzantine churches. Emily will teach about this site’s Christian history. Dinner and overnight at our hotels. (B.L.D)

DAY 6: SEA OF GALILEE – MT. BEATITUDES – CAESAREA PHILLIPI – TEL DAN

Location : Caesarea Philippi

We enjoy a morning boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, with teaching by Jeff and music with Aly Aleigha. We continue the day with a visit to the beautiful Mount of Beatitudes for Mass overlooking the peaceful waters of the Sea of Galilee. Following lunch, we drive to Caesarea Philippi and Banias to see the source of the Jordan River and hear Jeff teach about the origins of the papacy. Time permitting, we end our day at Tel Dan nature preserve. Dinner and overnight at the Sea of Galilee. (B.L.D)

DAY 7: ANCIENT BOAT – TABGHA – BET SHE’AN – SACHNE – JERUSALEM

Location : Bet She'an, Israel

Following breakfast, we check out of the hotel and visit the “Jesus Boat,” a fishing vessel dating back to the time of Jesus. We stop at Tabgha, where we see the restored Church of Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, before we travel to the ancient city of Bet She’an. Continue to Sachne hot springs for a picnic lunch and a refreshing swim (bring a bathing suit). Our drive to Jerusalem brings us along the Jordan Valley and Jericho before ascending into the hills to Jerusalem. At Mt. Scopus, we stop for a Genesis welcome to the Holy City before descending to our hotels. Following check-in and dinner, we travel a short distance to the King of Kings Center for Mass and a praise celebration led by our musicians. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B.L.D)

DAY 8: BETHLEHEM – ISRAELI MUSEUM

Location : Bethlehem, Israel

After breakfast, we drive to Bethlehem to visit the Grotto of Christ’s Birth at the Church of the Nativity and have Mass at the Church of St. Catherine next door. Continue to Shepherds’ Field for teaching by Jeff. We shop at a Christian cooperative handcrafts store in support of the Christian families in Bethlehem. In the afternoon, we visit the Israeli Museum to see a scale model of Jerusalem from the time of Christ and visit the Shrine of the Book that houses the Dead Sea Scrolls. Join Emily after dinner at the Leonardo Hotel for a special presentation on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which we will explore together on Monday. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B.L.D)

DAY 9: EIN GEDI – QUMRAN – BAPTISMAL SITE OF JESUS – DEAD SEA

Location : Qasr Al Yahud

After breakfast, we celebrate Mass and visit Qasr al-Yahud, the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Continue to Ein Gedi, a wildlife preserve, for teaching by Jeff, followed by a visit to Qumran Caves, where shepherds discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls. Following lunch at Qumran, our last stop of the day will be at the Dead Sea, where we float in the mineral-rich waters of the sea (bring your bathing suit). Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. DAY 10: JERUSALEM: MT. OF OLIVES – GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE – MT. ZION – ST. ANNE’S CHURCH

Location : Jerusalem, Israel

We start our day on Mt. of Olives. Walk along Palm Sunday Road and marvel at the panoramic view of the eternal golden city. We stop at Dominus Flevit, where Jesus wept over the city, and Jeff teaches us the meaning of suffering. Continue along the Jewish cemetery with a view over the Eastern Gate. See the Garden of Gethsemane and the Basilica of Agony, where we celebrate Mass. After lunch, we drive to Mt. Zion to visit St. Peter in Gallicantu and the Upper Room. Our last stop of the day is St. Anne’s Church to see the Pools of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the Paralytic and where we hear Jeff’s teaching. We return to our hotel for dinner. Join Jeff and Fr. Mike at the Leonardo Hotel after dinner for a special question-and-answer social. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B.L.D)

DAY 11: JERUSALEM: SOUTHERN STEPS OF THE TEMPLE – WESTERN WALL – FREE AFTERNOON

Location : Jerusalem, Israel

We are in the Old City of Jerusalem today. Our day starts with Mass, followed by a visit to the Davidson Center to sit on the steps to the Temple Mount that Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the Apostles would have walked. Hear inspiring teaching by Jeff. Following our visit to the Western Wall, to tuck a prayer into the ancient wall, enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy lunch and explore the Holy City. Tonight, we meet for the farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B.Special dinner)

Day 12: THE HOLY CITY: VIA DOLOROSA – CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE – FREE AFTERNOON

Location : Jerusalem, Israel

This morning, depart early for the Holy City. We pray the Stations of the Cross as we walk along the Via Dolorosa, ending with our visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where we venerate the place of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. The rest of the day, including lunch, is at leisure to explore on your own, enjoy local food places, and do some last-minute shopping and packing before departing either tonight or early tomorrow morning for Tel Aviv airport and your flights home. Your final documents will provide recommendations of things to do and local restaurants. You can choose to stay in the old city for dinner on your own or return to your hotel for included dinner.
