Day 2: YOU ARE IN ROME

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy

We start our trip by meeting the other group participants and our English-speaking tour manager at the airport. Our first stops are St. Paul Outside the Walls, where we celebrate Mass, and Tre Fontane where St. Paul was beheaded. Check into our hotel in the city center and relax before our Welcome Dinner with wine at a local trattoria where the dinner is made by the owner’s mom. Overnight in Rome. (Welcome Dinner with wine)

Day 3: SEE THE POPE AND THE CATACOMBS PLUS SUBIACO

Location : Vatican City

Following the morning attendance of the Papal Audience (TBC), we drive outside of Rome down the Via Appia to visit the Catacombs, where the early Christians prayed in secret and buried their dead. After our visit, we depart for the nearby town of Subiaco to see the Benedictine Monastery of St. Scholastica, the only surviving monastery of the 12 monasteries founded by Benedictines during the Middle Ages. Over the past 500 years, the monks have been working to turn the fresh produce they grow here into delicious food which we get a chance to taste as we explore the monastery and learn about St. Scholastica, St. Benedict’s sister, and see the cave of the Saint. Day 4: EXPLORE THE VATICAN

Location : Vatican City

We visit St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel, and tour the Scavi tunnels underneath the Vatican. In the afternoon explore the city on your own, visit a museum, or shop at a local outdoor market. Dinner is at leisure tonight. Overnight in Rome. (B.)

Day 5: THE GREAT ROMAN SIGHTS

Location : Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy

After breakfast, we enjoy a walking tour of the Colosseum (inside visit) and the Roman Forum (outside views). Then continue on a panoramic tour to the Circus Maximus and Palatine Hill. Proceed to the Ghetto where we enjoy a typical Roman lunch at an open-air restaurant. Following lunch, we continue our walking tour to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Gesu Church, the Pantheon, the Church of St. Augustin, and finally to Piazza Navona where our tour ends and you have an opportunity to explore the most beautiful square in Rome. Do some shopping and enjoy dinner in one of the many restaurants in the area. Overnight in Rome (B. Special Lunch)

Day 6: ON THE WAY THROUGH UMBRIA TO ASSISI

Location : Assisi, Province of Perugia, Italy

This morning we depart Rome, driving through the picturesque regions of Italy to the region of Umbria and the town of Assisi, the city of birds and silence. We explore the chapels of St. Francis Cathedral and walk through the town to visit St. Clare Church. In the town of lower Assisi, the magnificent St. Mary of the Angels Basilica awaits us. Dinner and overnight in Assisi. (B.D.)

Day 7: OLIVE OIL FARM – MONASTERY DINNER

Location : Siena, Province of Siena, Italy

Explore Siena in the morning on your own, where you see the famous Piazza del Campo known for its horse races. Later we see the relics of St. Catherine, the patron Saint of Italy, at St. Dominic Church. Departing Siena, we drive to a local agriturismo where we learn about cheese and olive oil production and enjoy a farm-to-table lunch. Dinner tonight is at the La Fareria Di Padre, located in St. Francis Monastery. We leave the lush landscape of Umbria for the rolling hills and cypress trees of Tuscany to arrive at a fantastic villa and our home for the next three nights. (B. Special lunch. D.)

Day 8: WINE TASTING IN TUSCANY – THE WALLED CITY OF SAN GIMIGNANO

Location : Tuscany, Italy

We head this morning to the wine region of Montalcino in the heart of Tuscany. We learn about wine production and have a taste of various types of locally produced wines. Our next stop is considered by many to be one of Tuscany’s most beautiful sights, the Abbey of St. Antimo. This 12th-century Romanesque church and monastery are set deep in the rolling olive groves outside the hilltop town of Montalcino in the Val d’ Orcia. Another great food tasting awaits us at a pecorino cheese farm, where we enjoy an Italian picnic lunch including several kinds of pecorino cheese, salami, and bread. On the way back to the hotel, we visit a winery to taste the most expensive red Italian wine: Montalcino. In the evening we contiRomenue to visit San Gimignano - the epitome of a Tuscan hilltop town - with fourteen remaining medieval towers and beautiful piazzas, perfect for sipping coffee and appreciating all that is Italy! Enjoy some free time to discover the ancient town on your own. Dinner is at leisure in San Gimignano followed by an overnight stay in our villa in the Tuscan countryside. (B. Special Lunch)

Day 9: FLORENCE! WOW!

Location : Florence, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy

Florence awaits us today! Upon arrival, we stop at Michelangelo Square for a panoramic view of the city. The walking tour includes the Duomo and the Baptistery next door (outside view), the Ponte Vecchio, and other highlights of the city. We visit the Mercato Centrale, the local market where we can sample and buy local produce, handcrafts, meats, cheeses and all things grown and produced in Italy. The afternoon is yours at leisure to explore the city on your own. Perhaps visit the Medici Chapel, the Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David, or the Uffizi Gallery. Mass will be celebrated. Return to the Tuscan villa for dinner and overnight. (B.D.)
